Comparing 7-Digit Numbers
Hey 4th graders! Today, we’re going to learn how to compare 7-digit numbers. Don’t worry, it’s easier than it sounds!
What Are 7-Digit Numbers?
A 7-digit number is a number with seven digits in it. For example, 1,234,567 is a 7-digit number. The first digit is in the millions place, the second digit is in the hundred thousands place, and so on.
How Do We Compare Two 7-Digit Numbers?
When we compare two numbers, we want to see which one is bigger (greater) or smaller (less). To do this, we follow a few simple steps:
- Look at the millions place. This is the first number on the left. The bigger the number in the millions place, the greater the whole number.
- Example: 3,456,789 is greater than 2,987,654 because 3 million is more than 2 million.
- If the millions place is the same, look at the hundred thousands place next.
- Example: 3,456,789 is greater than 3,123,456 because 4 hundred thousand is more than 1 hundred thousand.
- If both the millions and hundred thousands places are the same, keep moving to the right to the ten thousands, then the thousands, and so on, until you find a difference.
Practice Makes Perfect!
The best way to get good at comparing 7-digit numbers is to practice. When you compare the numbers, remember to always start with the largest place value (the millions place) and work your way to the right.
