Adding two-digit numbers can be fun and easy! Sometimes, when we add numbers, we need to carry over extra value to the next column. This is called “regrouping.” Let’s learn how to do it with an example: 56 + 78.
Steps to Add 56 and 78:
- Add the Ones Place:
- Look at the numbers in the ones place: 6 and 8.
- Add them together: 6 + 8 = 14.
- Write down the 4 in the ones place of the answer.
- Carry over the 1 (which is 10) to the tens place.
- Add the Tens Place:
- Now, add the numbers in the tens place: 5 and 7.
- Don’t forget to add the 1 you carried over: 5 + 7 + 1 = 13.
- Write down the 3 in the tens place of the answer.
- Since there’s no more place to carry over, write down the remaining 1 in the hundreds place.
So, 56 + 78 = 134.
Why Do We Regroup?
When the sum of the ones place is 10 or more, we regroup because 10 ones equal 1 ten. This helps us keep our numbers organized and accurate.
