Comparing Numbers Up to 10 Using Words
Hello, first graders! Are you ready to learn something new and fun? Today, we’re going to learn how to compare numbers using special words. Comparing numbers means we are figuring out which number is bigger, which one is smaller, or if two numbers are the same!
Important Words to Remember
When we compare numbers, we use three important words:
- Greater than: This means one number is bigger than the other. For example, 8 is greater than 5. We can say, “8 is greater than 5.”
- Less than: This means one number is smaller than the other. For example, 3 is less than 6. We can say, “3 is less than 6.”
- Equal to: This means both numbers are the same! For example, 4 is equal to 4. We can say, “4 is equal to 4.”
How to Compare Numbers
Let’s practice how we compare numbers! When you see two numbers, like 7 and 9, you can ask yourself: “Which number is bigger?” Since 9 is bigger than 7, we say, “7 is less than 9.”
Now, let’s try a different example: What if you have the numbers 5 and 5? Since they are the same, we say, “5 is equal to 5.”
Sometimes we compare numbers to see which one is smaller. For example, if you have 2 and 8, you know that 2 is smaller, so we say, “2 is less than 8.”

Here are some examples for you to practice. Think about each number and try to use the words greater than, less than, or equal to.
- Is 7 greater than or less than 9?

- Is 9 equal to 7, or is it greater than 7?
You can say your answers out loud or write them down! Try to use the comparing words for each pair of numbers.
Fun Tips for Comparing Numbers
- When you want to figure out which number is greater than or less than the other, imagine putting the numbers on a number line. The number on the right is always greater, and the number on the left is always less!
- If the numbers are the same, remember to use “equal to” because both numbers have the same amount.
