Comparing Numbers: Ordering 5-Digit Numbers from Greatest to Least
Welcome to another fun lesson on comparing numbers! Today, we will be working with 5-digit numbers. These are numbers that have five digits in them, like 24,837 or 56,201. Our goal is to learn how to put these numbers in order, from the greatest to the least.
Steps to Compare 5-Digit Numbers:
- Look at the first digit: The first digit is the most important. A number with a larger first digit will always be greater. For example, between 56,201 and 24,837, the number 56,201 is larger because 5 is greater than 2.
- If the first digits are the same, move to the second digit. Let’s compare 56,201 and 57,423. Both start with 5, so we move to the next digit. Here, 7 is greater than 6, so 57,423 is larger than 56,201.
- Keep going if necessary: If the first two digits are the same, continue comparing the third, fourth, and even the fifth digits. For example, between 57,432 and 57,423, you can see that the third digit is the same, but the fourth digit is different. Since 3 is greater than 2, 57,432 is the larger number.
Example:
Let’s try putting these numbers in order from greatest to least:
- 76,845
- 74,392
- 76,948
- 72,101
- First, look at the first digit of each number:
76,845
74,392
76,948
72,101The first digits are 7, so these are all in the seventy-thousands range. Now, compare the second digits:- 6 in 76,845 and 76,948
- 4 in 74,392
- 2 in 72,101
So, the greatest number is either 76,845 or 76,948. Since 9 is greater than 8, 76,948 is the largest number.
- Continue comparing the rest:
- 76,948 (greatest)
- 76,845 (next)
- 74,392 (third)
- 72,101 (least)
The order from greatest to least is:
76,948 > 76,845 > 74,392 > 72,101
